A good source for discussion

Michael Howard's cogent attempt to construct a theoretical substructure for "market socialism" provides a good basis for discussion around issues of post-capitalism and what kind of "socialism" remains viable for the twenty-first century. The book is especially valuable for its treatment of the Soviet-type socialist model and the reasons for its failure and also its well-researched presentation of various existing experiments in self-management, worker-ownership etc, with both their successes and shortcomings.
Howard's presentation of market socialism as an attractive and realistic improvement on capitalism is relatively persuasive, however his attempts to defend his model against other self-managed alternatives, notably Michael Albert's "Parecon" are less convincing. Howard merely states his belief that market socialism is a more practical and reasonable alternative to capitalism than the "parecon" but fails to adequately address the arguments directed at market systems by thinkers such as Michael Albert and Robin Hahnel.
One great advantage of Howard's book is its readibility and clarity. It is certainly a valuable contribution to socialist theory and there is much to admire in it. In contrast however, my personal opinion remains that the best proposal for a self-managing economy currently under discussion remains the Parecon model. As a companion to this work, I heartily recommend Michael Albert's "Parecon" for readers interested in exploring the potential pitfalls and weaknesses of the ideas contained in Howard's book.

Review THIS, Amazon

Amazon sent me an email asking if I'd like to submit a review for this product. But this presents a problem, since Amazon never shipped it. I would actually love read Michael Howard's book and provide a review. I'd much prefer this to getting my money back because I was really interested in reading this book. But I can't seem to get either the book or a refund out of Amazon. So this "review" is about Amazon, not Michael Howard's book. Sorry if this seems inappropriate. But Amazon clearly failed to do their job, they've ignored my formal complaint, I've received no compensation or feedback, and I won't be doing any more business with Amazon. I hope this "review" helps other consumers to avoid similar difficulties with Amazon. Thank you for reading.
