Through a collection of articles written over the last 50 years, this book traces both the history of the academic study of subcultures and the history of subcultures themselves. While you'll find the usual assortment of articles on punk rock, street gangs, and Star Trek fans, what is perhaps most interesting are the articles from the early days of "subculture studies." Two of the highlights include a piece by Paul G. Cressey on 1930s taxi dancers and their opinions on race and class, and an article by Howard Becker on the language and attitudes of jazz musicians in the early '60s. The 55 selections in this volume offer a rich spectrum of subcultures and the academic responses they have evoked.

About the Author
Ken Gelder is a Reader in the Department of English and Cultural Studies at the University of Melbourne. His books include Reading the Vampire (1994) and, with Jane M. Jacobs, Uncanny Australia: Sacredness and Identity in a Postcolonial Nation (1998). He is also editor of The Horror Reader (2000). His new book, Popular Fiction: The Logics and Practices of a Literary Field, will be published by Routledge in December 2004.

A must for contemporary subculturalists

Gelder and Thornton have pulled together a book that I could have based my entire senior thesis upon as the sole source. Most subculture studies anthologies rely too much on the British school of thought. While that was the seminal work in the field, there's been a *few* more developments since the sixties :) Gelder and Thornton realize this, and draw from almost a full century of subculture studies. Each progression in the field is grouped into a new chapter, with a cohesive introduction section. Some chapter will take a serious sociologist to manage full appreciation - the "sociologese" can get thick when individual authors are trying to obscure the fact that their thesis is a "stretch" to put it mildly. But the book on the whole is a great resource for anyone involved in subculture studies - a good range, considerable depth, and reader-friendly organization for those not yet versed in the particulars of the field.

A great book from a great professor.

After taking some classes from Dr. Steve Feller, I got interested in holograms. Dr. Feller does offer a class about Holography, but I could not take it due to class scheduling conflict. That being said after reading the book I was very surprised to see how simple it is to make a rudimentary hologram using standard camera film. At the end of this semester, I am going to try my hand at making one. I would encourage anyone who had an interested in learning how these are made to read this book.

Although very different in treatment, each is compelling in its own way and both are visually beautiful. Lynch's illustrations are, perhaps, the more unusual. Like closeup camera shots, they are tightly focused on the soldier and show only those bits of the world at large that affect him. These narrow, sometimes startling perspectives give certain illustrations real depth and dimension, creating powerful visual images, while his use of dense, neutral shades underscores the drama of the soldier's journey and provides a sense of hard-edged reality. The book's overall design is not as effective as some of the individual illustrations, however. Small, extraneous drawings of toys punctuate large blocks of text and distract the eye from its primary focus on the facing page. The placement of the text is blocky and awkward, often laid on top of the illustrations in a distracting manner. Marcellino takes a more traditional approach in his illustrations. Viewers will recognize this immediately as a "fairy tale" by his use of soft, misty colors, all washed in the golden glow of candlelight. The palette is warm, and the pictures have texture and a panoramic sweep that gives substance to the wider world in which the Tin Soldier's adventures take place, enhancing the sense of the his haplessness. The illustrations are flatter, less dynamic than Lynch's, but the overall design is more effective. From title page to endpapers, careful and loving attention has been paid to balance and flow; the typeface is eye-catching and integral to the whole. Although both books are primarily showcases for the artists, the story is still important and the two are quite different. Lewis's translation is standard Andersen--wordy and slightly old-fashioned, but very readable. Seidler's text, while maintaining a strong sense of Andersen's voice, is tighter and much more direct. It reads fluidly with a verbal balance and flow that complements Marcellino's illustrations. For overall quality bookmaking, the choice would be the Marcellino, although Lynch's work is fresh and different, and has more child appeal. The Disabled Veteran

I never heard of this Hans Christian Anderson's Fairy Tale until my daughter viewed Fantasia 2000. However the story is much different than what is depicted on film. I bought the paperback edition yet I would prefer a hardcover to pass down to my child. The story is very tragic for the soldier and his love when both are put to the test. Many scenes appear by chance and left for the reader to fill in the blanks yet I believe this was deliberately hidden and turned into metaphor in a time when the people were censored in Europe.

This is a classic Christmas story with excellent illustrations. I bought a used copy and the seller did an excellent job to make sure I was satisfied when I mentioned that it had a little more wear and tear than I expected.

Very well written! WONDERFUL story....

I have read a wide selection of westerns, but this book certainly takes the prize for giving the most accurate vision of what trail driving was really like. Andy Adams is one of my favorite authors. I think that Tom Quirk (the "hero" of this book as well as "The Texas Matchmaker" and "The Log of a Cowboy") is a very genuine portrayal of the American Cowboy.

Loaded with great historical insights

Andy Adams wrote from personal experience of driving cattle from Texas to Montana and The Outlet is one of the most authentic stories you'll ever read about a cattle drive in the 1880s.
I discovered Andy's writing last year and am in the process of reading everything of his that I can find.

About the Author
"Dr. Bharat Bhasker is currently Professor of Information Technology and Systems, and founder and head of Internet Commerce Research Center at IIM, Lucknow. He is also a visiting professor at several universities abroad, member of several advisory committees of the Government of India, and an honorary expert of the National Science Education and Research Council of Canada. An alumnus of IIT-Roorkee and Virginia Polytechnic Institute and State University, Dr. Bhasker has 11 years of work experience in leading US research establishments including NASA’s Goddard Space Flight Center. Dr. Bhasker has to his credit several publications including a book Electronic Commerce: Framework, Technologies and Applications published by Tata McGraw Hill. Dr. Srikumar Krishnamoorthy, an alumnus of IIM-Lucknow, is Senior Research Scientist at Infosys Technologies Limited with over 8 years of industry experience in research, product development and consulting. He has published several research papers in peer-reviewed conferences and journals. His key research interests include personalization in e-commerce, data federation, query optimization, information retrieval and machine learning."
