Published for his eightieth birthday, this remarkable book serves as summary of this great theologian's life's work
By Love Thy Enemy
Including a lengthy and life-long interview, some sermons given shortly before publication, other documents and correspondence, as well as a Scriptural and poetical selection, etc., this seemingly slim volume contains conprehensive and comprehensible material from throughout the life of this great Catholic theologian, the Reverend Father Schillebeeckx, rendering much difficult and technical material more accessible to the layman, explaining many doubts, clarifying concerns and misunderstandings, and making this great and warm and human heart and soul blessed by God with a mighty intellect and love for God and the Church closer to us all.

The sermons here transcribed are especially helpful, as they were delivered shortly before publicaiton. One of these sermons beautifully (as always with this great and Catholic Theologian) declares his deep Faith in the Resurrection, with his profound attempt at explanation of this Faith.

A few people, beating a long dead horse, continue unfairly to question unjustly this profound Catholic soul, yet his works will live on long after us who are here and now. His great trilogy beginning with Jesus: An Experiment in Christology and continuing through Christ: The Experience of Jesus as Lord, when the dust has settled and God continues whatever form of ecclesiology and apostolic succession a future humanity finds most significant in a future millenium through the on-going Pilgrim process of Ecclesiogenesis -, the prodigious theological work of the Reverend Father Schillebeeckx will be gratefully received and respected as has been his fellow Dominican St Thomas Aquinas Summa Theologica (translated by Fathers of the English Dominican Province) (5 Volume Set) once the outraged controversy from the Angelic Doctor's own contemporaries had long been forgotten and we could learn to catch up with Aquinas enough to declare him the "official" theology, comprehending in part his intent, elaborate and minute methodology and his labor's true significance for understanding our Faith. Thus shall come to Father Schillebeeckx. The bookburners cannot win, as one fictional one did so tragically and painfully and Pyrricly and temporarily in the semiotic philosopher Umberto Ecco's great novel The Name of the Rose: including the Author's Postscript.

Fortunately we do not have to wait for (and indeed we cannot physically wait to see but from Heaven) what future generations of Catholics will receive and comprehend, as this brief volume makes much which is not now understood very clear, including not only a complete biographical interview and an excellent comprehensive inrtoduction, but also discussing several points of theology within their historical context.

For example much background noise has arisen around the poorly understood term transignification. A few have whittled this word down to an easily digestible monosyllable of sign, having limited their experience and understanding of sign to, for instance, that of a concrete physical highway road sign which indicates the way to go to a certain destination using alphanumeric and graphical symbols which are not in themselves the way but only point out the way. Thus the sign to Cincinnatti is not in reality the road to Cincinatti.

This is very far from the true meaning of transignification, which comes from the Lacanian and semiotic and philosophical terms for signification, signifiers, signified, etc. The closest we may come in our common parlance is the word significant, which has itself lost much of its precision, power and, well, significance.

Thus a certain few stimulate and excite themselves to a great and delightful (for them) fever pitch by purposefully misunderstanding and mistinterpreting the true meaning of this term, inventing by their own dim and deceitful lights heresy where none exists.

I refer them therefore to pages 23 and 24 of this present volume where in the midst of interview questions regarding his post-Conciliar audience with Pope Paul VI, Father Schillebeeckx takes the opportunity to discuss this very term. Throughout this bascially biographical interview, Father Schillebeeckx humbly and passionately takes the light off himself and turns, as a great Domincan teacher and preacher, to explaining points of theology and of Faith, making of this interview something far more than originally intended.

Thus we here read (please remember the rough English translation cannot accurately reflect the Reverend Father's own words, nor are the footnotes his): "The Pope told me, 'I am truly content with what you said in your lectures at Domus Mariae on the Eucharist.' At that time I was defending transignification. The encyclical Mysterium fidei had just come out (this was Spetember 1965) and I began my lecture by praising the encyclical. I said that I was against transignification understood as pure symbolism and that transubstantiation(13) is a transignification in an ontological sense(14). The Pope told me: 'They've reported you've become one of us.' I didn't understand what he meant; I had the sensation of not having been clear. Why should I have become 'one of us?' I am one of the Church. Who are these 'us?'

"I certainly had observations to make on the encyclical, but I expressed them blandly. I had observations on transignification as pure symbolism. For me, transignification was ontological, something quite different from a physical transignification. Someone tried to explain the expression used by Paul VI as meaning that the Pope was not opposed to my ideas on the Eucharist.

"However, I didn't think this a very happy expression. He encouraged me to continue my research, expressed himself content with the lectures. I wanted to defend myself by saying something about my theology, but he wouldn't let me. At the end of the audience he took out a rosary from a drawer and said, 'Take it to your father.' And what about my mother? He gave me another one. Then he called the secretary who brought in the photographer. That was the end of the audience.

"At the door I met the Benedictine abbot Basil Hume, who was to become Archbishop of Westminister. He said to me, 'Fr. Schillebeeckx, keep going as you are. (pp. 23,24)"

The footnotes referred to state: "(13) transubstantiation is the transformation or conversion of the bread into the body and the wine into the blood. Transignificaiton is the transformation or conversion of the bread into the body and the wine into the blood. Transignification is a radical transformation of the ultimate meaning of what the bread is after cnosecration. Before consecration the bread is nutrition for the body, whereas after consecration the bread is totally spiritual nutrition. Transfinaliztion: the bread is bodily nutrition but the aim of the consecrated bread is a spiritual nutrition, a gift of Christ the saviour. Transignification and transfinalization are concepts nearer to the modern mentality. With these terms Schillebeeckx seeks to give a better expression to the anthropological significance of the eucharistic presence in relation to that of the believer and the church. The ultimate destination of the bread changes profoundly with consecration.

"(14) After the consecration the reality of the bread is something different, specifically the body of Christ."

So that settle it then. For the Reverend Father Schillebeeckx transignification is ontological. Case closed. Read this book.

For those few of you who slept through your Philosophy of Theology 101 course, I refer you to the excellent The HarperCollins Encyclopedia of Catholicism, specifically in its article on ontology, where this is described as a pre-Conciliar neo-Scholastic concern for the ground of all being based in God, to summarize very roughly and imperfectly. Thus for the Reverend Father Schillebeeckx, who celebrates this November 93 years of a rich and fruitful life in the Lord's service, remember him please in your prayers, who was trained twenty years before the Council (thus pre-Conciliar) in Dominican seminaries (thus Scholastic as Aquinas), ontology is a major concern. The Reverend Father Schillebeeckx here states as clearly and as strongly as he can that transignification is in no way a mere roadsign but a full and comprehensible expression in modern post-Kantian terminology of the very Real Presence of Jesus Christ in the Eucharist. Transignification is ontological means that the Host is no longer significantly bread but is truly the Body of Christ.

They Saw the Elephant: Women in the California Gold Rush, by JoAnn Levy

"The phrase ’seeing the elephant’ symbolized for ’49 gold rushers the exotic, the mythical, the once-in-a-lifetime adventure, unequaled anywhere else but in the journey to the promised land of fortune: California. Most western myths . . . generally depict an exclusively male gold rush. Levy’s book debunks that myth. Here a variety of women travel, work, and write their way across the pages of western migrant history."-Choice

From Publishers Weekly
In the literature of the Gold Rush, women have been generally neglected. Freelance writer Levy here corrects that oversight with a colorful account of intrepid female argonauts--with and without men. She draws on letters, journals and reminiscences for a fresh view of western history. The women traveled overland, by ship round the Horn (one family survived three burning ships); they crossed the Isthmus of Panama by mule, and Nicaragua by steamship and mule. In California they ran boardinghouses, provided meals and laundry service for miners, and organized schools and churches. The cast of characters includes actresses and prostitutes, a stagecoach driver and ordinary women seeking to make a new home. Levy does for the Gold Rush what Lillian Schlissel did for the Plains emigrants in Women's Diaries of the Westward Journey . The book is a welcome addition to regional history as well as to women's studies. Illustrated.

From School Library Journal
YA-- In this exciting and inspiring account of the women who helped settle California, Levy explores the leadership roles of those who contributed to the founding of businesses, towns, and mining camps. Photographs, letters, and diary accounts contribute to the realism of these adventures.

From Library Journal
Not just another book about the California Gold Rush, this account of the over-looked "gold rushing women" makes a significant contribution to the scholarship of women's studies. Quoting from letters, diaries, and reminiscences, California native Levy skillfully weaves together the stories of two dozen women, re-creating the experience of thousands. Liberated from social restraints, the women Argonauts worked as "boarding house keepers and miners, missionaries and actresses, church builders and gamblers, school teachers and temperance speakers, even a Wells Fargo & Company stage driver." Devotees of Californiana will enjoy this adventure story. Scholars will value the extensive bibliography and the biographical postscripts.

Marvelous book
By Cleo Griffith
This is one of the most interesting books on women's history I have read. Told in the words of diaries and letters by the women at the time of the California Gold Rush this brings a vivid picture of the life-styles of this rugged time, and the hardships suffered as well as the triumphs. I was engrossed as have been the friends to whom I have loaned the book...a wonderful piece of California history, should be read by everyone who is the least bit interested in this state -- not to mention the many states from which the women traveled. Read a few pages -- I think you will be hooked.

Review
Pabla has prepared a highly technical volume with an up-to-date and comprehensive series of topics for graduate students or professionals and practitioners of power distribution engineering. The breadth of subject matter is impressive -- from system planning, load forecasting, and customer service issues, to nuts and bolts of distribution system component design, operation, and failure modes. Rarely has this much subject matter, presented in practical, applicable methodology, been made available in a single volume. The author provides in-depth coverage of the latest distribution automation technologies and addresses new demand-side (i.e., market-driven) issues such as reliability and power quality. Many operations policy and procedure topics are based on the author's native Indian distribution systems and their regulation. Still, the predominance of general technical problem discussions and engineering solutions make the text appropriate to a global user audience. Summing Up: Highly recommended. Crimes of Globalization (New Directions in Critical Criminology), by Dawn Rothe, David O. Friedrichs

This book addresses immensely consequential crimes in the world today that, to date, have been almost wholly neglected by students of crime and criminal justice: crimes of globalization. This term refers to the hugely harmful consequences of the policies and practices of international financial institutions – principally in the global South. A case is made for characterizing these policies and practices specifically as crime. Although there is now a substantial criminological literature on transnational crimes, crimes of states and state-corporate crimes, crimes of globalization intersect with, but are not synonymous with, these crimes.

Identifying specific reasons why students of crime and criminal justice should have an interest in this topic, this text also identifies underlying assumptions, defines key terms, and situates crimes of globalization within the criminological enterprise. The authors also define crimes of globalization and review the literature to date on the topic; review the current forms of crimes of globalization; outline an integrated theory of crimes of globalization; and identify the challenges of controlling the international financial institutions that perpetrate crimes of globalization, including the role of an emerging Global Justice Movement.

The authors of this book have published widely on white collar crime, crimes of states, state-corporate crime and related topics. This book will be essential reading for academics and students of crime and criminal justice who, the authors argue, need to attend to emerging forms of crime that arise specifically out of the conditions of globalization in our increasingly globalized, rapidly changing world.

‘Written with drive and flair, this book intends to shake up criminology. It encourages it to move away from parochial concerns and towards addressing the global issues of our time. 'A lucid - and provocative - introduction to the crimes of global financial institutions.' - David Nelken, Distinguished Professor of Sociology , University of Macerata , Italy

‘Criminology has a critical role in exposing, interpreting, explaining and responding to harms perpetrated by international financial institutions. This book provides a stimulating, controversial and provocative foundation for addressing the present injustices associated with, and future uncertainties created by, the crimes of globalisation. Not to be missed.’ - Professor Rob White, University of Tasmania, Australia

‘This compelling narrative of globalization and crime navigates the boundary between global harms and crimes and the space between the powerful international institutions of globalization and its powerless victims. Dawn L. Rothe and David O. Friedrichs, both renowned for path-breaking work in the area of global, state and white collar crime, open up new perspectives and provide fresh insights into the world of crimes of globalization. Funny, Romantic, Enjoyable.
By SMP
Funny, Romantic and Enjoyable. This is how I describe "The Sicilian's Marriage Arrangement". Hope Bishop was not your usual virginal heroine. She was strong and knew her own limitations. And although she had been secretly in love with Sicilian tycoon Luciano di Valerio since her teen years, she did not allow him to walk all over her.

In this book the hero, Luciano is taken down a peg or two when he expects Hope to just fall over in gratitude when he shows her attention and she doesn't. She is innocent, but as the saying goes, she "was not born yesterday.

Great Romantic Read.

Excellent Book !
By E.Capri
Well I think all the other reviews have said it, this book was a gem I loved both the Hero and the Heroine. Hope was a sweetheart you didnt get the impression she was a just a poor little rich girl whinning about not being loved you or rather I felt genuine sympathy for the way she was treated by her grandfather and other characters in the book...Enters Luciano big time alpha-male and sicilian to boot. He made me laugh alot because he believed in everything he was saying and doing even if it seemed archaic to Hope herself who although shy and laid back was no doormat when she was pushed to her limits. I loved that this book didn't start like so many Harlequin Presents with the main characters at odds with one another from the word go. You got to see their affection and then ultimately love for one another grow, shift and change through the progression of the story. Which in a lot of cases with these stories are the exact opposite where you have the characters going for eachothers throats at the word "go" and then the author has to tell this complete back story of how they once were lovers and are now mortal ememies and how they get back to be lovers once more. This story was a breath of fresh air. Kudos to Lucy Monroe!

Boring and 'Hope'less
By Anusha
The heroine's name was Hope. And she was absolutely hopeless. And the hero was hopeless too. He treated her so badly! Not that I've not seen misunderstanding leading to ill treatment earlier, but this was disgusting and humiliating.
Spoilers: To have sex with his wife everyday (for a long time) without saying even a word to her in the day, refusing to talk to her, just because he thought that she schemed the marriage with him? Is that such a capital offense which demands such a treatment? And she takes all that crap, yet another reviewer has said she was no doormat when pushed to limits... well perception matters. :) And all of sudden in the end, he says he was sort of in love with her since ever.
I was so put off, I decided never to read another Lucy Monroe book, but then I read "The Greek Tycoon's Ultimatum". That was very good book, and I'm glad I read it. I will be hope'ful' and try other Books by Monroe

Men of Tomorrow: Geeks, Gangsters, and the Birth of the Comic Book, by Gerard Jones

By the Eisner Award-winning author of The Comic Book Heroes, Killing Monsters, and scores of successful comic books and screenplays, Men of Tomorrow is the first book to tell the surprising story of the young Jewish misfits, hustlers and nerds who invented the superhero and the comic book industry. Among the characters in this vibrant panorama: ·      Jerry Siegel and Joe Shuster, the goofy myopic creators of Superman, who sold the rights to the Man of Tomorrow for $130 to...     Harry Donenfield, former pornographer and con-man, and his partner, Jack Liebowitz, founder of DC Comics, who went on to help build Steve Ross's legendary Warner Communications.      Batman's Bob Kane, who rose to fame and fortune in a career based entirely on lies and self-promotion.     Mort Weisinger, the ruthless editor of Superman, who suffered a nervous breakdown when he tried to be a superhero himself.      Plus Stan Lee, founder of a new kind of hero, including Spiderman, at Marvel Comics; Will Eisner, whose creation "The Spirit" has become a cult classic, and many, many more.     Springing unheralded out of working-class Jewish immigrant neighborhoods in the depths of the Depression, these young men transformed an odd mix of geekdom, science fiction, and outsider yearnings into blue-eyed chisel-nosed crime-fighters and adventurers who quickly captured the mainstream imagination. Within a few years their inventions were being read by 90% of American children and had spawned a new genre in movies, radio and TV that still dominates youth entertainment seventy years later. Drawing on exhaustive research, including interviews with friends and relatives of the creators, Jones reveals how the immigrant experience and the collision of Yiddish and American culture-forged in the crucible of two world wars-shaped the vision of the make-believe hero. He chronicles how the comics sparked a frightened counterattack that nearly destroyed the industry in the 1950's and how later they surged back at an underground level, to inspire a new generation to transmute those long-ago fantasies into art, literature, blockbuster movies and graphic novels. Animated by the stories of some of the last century's most charismatic and conniving artists, writers and businessmen, Men of Tomorrow brilliantly demonstrates how the creators of the superheroes gained their cultural power and established a crucial place in the modern imagination.

From The New Yorker
This history of the birth of superhero comics highlights three pivotal figures. The story begins early in the last century, on the Lower East Side, where Harry Donenfeld rises from the streets to become king of the "smooshes"—soft-core magazines with titles like French Humor and Hot Tales. Later, two high-school friends in Cleveland, Joe Shuster and Jerry Siegel, become avid fans of "scientifiction," the new kind of literature promoted by their favorite pulp magazines. The disparate worlds of the wise guy and the geeks collide in 1938, and the result is Action Comics #1, the début of Superman. For Donenfeld, the comics were a way to sidestep the censors. For Shuster and Siegel, they were both a calling and an eventual source of misery: the pair waged a lifelong campaign for credit and appropriate compensation.

From Booklist
The comic book's early days have received heightened attention in the wake of Michael Chabon's Pulitzer Prize-winning novel, Kavalier and Clay, about the cutthroat businessmen and naive artists who then populated the industry. Although Jones' history limns dozens of the young writers and artists, most from working-class Jewish neighborhoods and many still teenaged, and the bosses who exploited them, its central figures are Jerry Siegel and Joe Shuster, who launched the superhero genre by creating Superman, only to sell the rights to the character for a pittance and spend decades in obscurity and near-poverty. Jones continues the story through the censorship that nearly destroyed the industry in the 1950s to the 1960s superhero revival that continues today. Jones' experience as a comic-book scripter, albeit decades after the period he chronicles, gives him the advantage over most previous writers on the comics milieu, and his vivid writing suits the subject. But it is his impressively thorough research that makes this one of the most valuable books on a distinctively American storytelling form. Gordon Flagg

Review
"'Men of Tomorrow is written with the thrilled verve of the comic book fan, along with a historians concern for scholarly apparatus and a journalist's eye for a good story.'" Daily Telegraph "'The most insightful, engaging and yes, erudite account of how comic books elbowed their way to the very core of mainstream popular culture... For anyone who ever craved (and still does) the next issue of Superman or Mad Magazine or the Fantastic Four, Jones will remind you what that thrill felt like - and why' Scotsman" "It's a tribute to the vividness with which Jones tells his tale that Siegel and Schuster ultimately become more interesting than Superman... Fascinating... Absorbing' Charles Shaar Murray, Independent" "[A] gleeful pop-culture history, told with comic book pacing, deadpan wit and an ear for a telling phrase... It's a Jewish story and it's an American story. It might even be an American classic.'" Glasgow Herald "What a story... Men Of Tomorrow reads like a novel... Very convincing...rich and rewarding.' Scotland on Sunday"

"Biography not bibliography"
By Amazon Customer
By Gerard Jones's own admission this book is a biography and not a bibliography, it's more about the real world Golden Age players than their brightly costumed alter egos. It should technically be described as a comparative social biography of Superman's creators (Jerry Siegel and Joe Shuster) and Superman's publishers (Harry Donenfeld and Jack Liebowitz). The introduction is dynamite and really sets the scene for where Jerry Siegel was on the day Superman The Movie was announced. The first act paints a broad picture of 1920s and 1930s New York and Cleveland, and illustrates how different social conditions shaped the lives of very different groups of immigrant Jews.

The dense, dangerous world of early 20th century New York is perhaps the most emotive and Jones expertly draws the reader into the world of the street gangs and Prohibition era alliances that gave birth to the Jewish dominated New York mob. His portrait of Harry Donenfeld is as an opportunistic, if charismatic, rogue and he portrays Liebowitz as a humourless straight man - a real-life double act. By contrast Cleveland comes across as an icon of suburban American life and we get a real sense of Jerry Siegel's childhood - including the revelation that Siegel's father had been murdered. Of the four leads Joe Shuster remains the most enigmatic.

Woven through the these histories are the side stories of the elder and younger Gaines, Bob Kane, Bill Finger, Julius Schwartz, Mort Weisinger, Stan Lee, Jack Kirby, Will Eisner, and a host of other names. Most of them were from the same generation, most of them were Jewish and most of them were drawn to New York by a powerful new medium. Something Jones doesn't do is to carry the sense of the Jewishness much further. He uses it to give us a sense of the New York scene and to show the growth of the businesses on the edge of the mob, but it isn't followed through and all we are left with is links between former mob businesses. It would have been nice to have more of a sense of how the strong Jewish roots of the industry became eroded.

The same cast features prominently in the middle act of the book which chronicles the 1940s and the maturation of the medium. They are also followed through the last (third) act which deals with their post-1940s history. Jones glosses over much of the Silver Age and instead concentrates on how the first generation of comic book players faired in the post Comics Code world. The thread that ties the entire narrative together is Superman. From his inception, his influences, and his sale to the subsequent play and counter play between Siegel and Donenfeld. Jones never demonises either party and he aptly demonstrates how completely different life experiences created two people who simply didn't understand each other. Each party feeling fully justified to claim Superman as their own.

Jones's book is a rich look at the real world figures who inspired Michael Chabon's The Amazing Adventures of Kavalier and Clay. A lot of the early material is based on extensive interviews with the surviving players and almost as importantly interviews with people from outside the comic book industry that knew the players. His writing flows easily and holds your attention, although the more well read fan may find themselves occasionally skimming through the more famous sections (a danger, as Jones often reveals new details). He digs into the industry's self reinforcing mythology and strips it away to show the real people and their personal struggles.

Most comic book histories, many of them excellent, are based on first hand accounts from the surviving editors and artists ("the Geeks") collected by fan historians (themselves "Geeks") that are often more focused on the creative process than on the social history. Jones's book focuses equally on publishers and the creators, and as I comic fan I was at times far more interested in the, to me, hitherto unknown world of Donenfeld and Liebowitz. This isn't an apologist work, but it is balanced towards a wider audience than most comic book histories will reach.

street superheroes
By William Kowinski
Gerald Jones, himself a sometimes comic book and superhero screenwriter, describes the real origins of Superman and other superheroes in the gritty urban streets of the 1930s. In this mostly chronological narrative, we follow high school collaborators Jerry Seigel and Joe Shuster, who created Superman, the first of the superheroes who reemerged in recent years to dominate the box office.

Jones also profiles Bob Kane of Batman fame (portrayed as a less than admirable figure) and Stan Lee, impresario of the Marvel superheroes, like Spider-Man and the Hulk.

But this is not a gee-whiz comic book portrayal, or a series of personality profiles. This is rich cultural history brought to life. By following these characters, readers will learn as much about Prohibition and the Depression, and what it was like for immigrants scrapping to make it in the teeming cities. Perhaps among the surprises is the involvement of gangsters in the success of the crime-fighting superheroes.

Jones shows how the superheroes established the comic book in American culture, as a kind of combination of several genres: the daily newspaper comic strips (so popular and important in immigrant life---as well as a way that many immigrants learned English), and the similarly popular crime and science fiction pulp magazines.

This book's publicity calls it "A real-life Kavalier and Clay." I read it just after reading that mesmerizing Michael Chabon novel, and though this non-fiction book is mostly about a different era, it also tells an engrossing story very well. I was also impressed by the author's care in telling what is known, what is generally believed but doesn't quite check out, and what is still speculation.

Startling revelations!
By fourcolor
I've read basically everything out there about the early history of comics and I wasn't expecting any new bombshells--so I was amazed by Jones's discovery of the "true origin" of Superman in the violence that occurred to his father, and his tracing of the way Jerry Siegel rewrote his own life story to portray himself as an innocent victim when in fact he was a much more complicated man who brought about his own destruction in many ways. What Jones uncovered about his abandonment of his first wife and child for a younger, prettier other woman (the model for Lois Lane!) shows a side of Siegel I'd never seen before. And the information on the publishers, Harry Donenfeld and Jack Liebowitz, has never appeared anywhere as far as I know. Who knew the roots of comics lead back to bootlegging and lapsed socialists? No wonder this got such high praise from Michael Chabon, Alan Moore, Art Spiegelman, etc. etc. It changes our understanding of the comics medium!

Without a doubt Ever "stumbled" in your faith? Wrestled with uncertainty? Wondered if you're a true believer? If the answer is yes to any of these questions―and it probably is―you have reason to celebrate. In this candid book based on his own struggle with doubt, John Ortberg traces the line between belief and unbelief and finds that it's less a dividing line between hostile camps than a razor's edge that runs through every soul. His findings point toward the relief of being totally honest. Doubt … Questions … Honest faith … Outrageous hope … It's a chain reaction that can actually strengthen our relationship with God, and that, says Ortberg, is cause for celebration.

No doubt -- I loved Know Doubt!
By JustReading2008
This is my third Ortberg book, and based on what I've read so far, I look forward to reading more. Every book of his that I've read is honest, straightforward, and witty -- all without being preachy. Very down to earth. This book was especially wonderful -- mostly because it hit so close to home. I am always struggling with doubt and kicking myself for not having stronger faith. Ortberg explains that we all have doubts -- no one is 100% one way or the other when it comes to faith. Doubt is actually a necessary part of growth... it prompts us to search for truth, and in the long run strengthens our convictions. He also says that the core of faith is trust. Throughout the book, he also references books by other authors, including atheists such as Richard Dawkins and Christopher Hitchens. Even though the citations are not always pleasant to read, I think it gives the reader a broader view of the topic of faith. I will definitely be re-reading this one.

Misleading
By EB
This book is misleading because it is the paperback version of Faith & Doubt that came out in 2008. Don't waste your money if you already have the hardcover. The book itself is good, but I don't like it when they change the cover and title and confuse people.

From Library Journal
This book of liturgical texts for American Presbyterians revises and replaces The Worshipbook (1970) as well as Book of Common Worship (1906, 1932, 1946). It is a wonderful resource, providing a wide variety of options for services on the Lord's Day with word and optional sacrament (Holy Communion). It gives seasonal and special day liturgies; forms for baptism and reaffirmation of the baptismal covenant; a psalter (127 of the biblical psalms); special prayers for various occasions; and both a Sunday/festival and a daily lectionary as well as a liturgical calendar. It uses inclusive language not only for people but also for God, making this a book other Christian bodies will want to study carefully and emulate. Essential for seminary and large academic libraries but highly recommended for all libraries.

An excellent worship resource
By Sarah Sharp
I bought this book for a Theology class I took during college, but have used it since as a guide for daily devotions. Its prayers take on a natural rhythm throughout the year, and I feel connected to a larger tradition knowing that others use this same book to guide their own daily worship. For professional worship wonks and lay persons alike, this volume should have a prized position in any library.

Great Resource
By Charles A. Wells
I am an ordained minister in the Wesleyan theological background and we do not have a resource like this. I bought this and was skeptical but after I received it and used it, it is a must have for all minister's libraries. It already has helped my daily walk with the Lord in the daily prayer. And has awesome services for many different situations.

This is a Jewel!
By Peter Fair
An amazing resource for anyone who is interested in learning worship, prayers, and other insights for spiritual growth. I wish this were also available for Kindle like the companion to the book of common worship, which I recommend to get as well. With these two Scripture-saturated resources I am getting - among other things - such an in-depth understanding of true worship, that helps my daily walk with the Lord. Hallelujah!
