This book contains the proceedings of the International Symposium on Alternative and Advanced Automotive Engines, held in Vancouver, B.C., on August 11 and 12, 1986. The symposium was sponsored by EXPO 86 and The University of British Columbia, and was part of the specialized periods program of EXPO 86, the 1986 world's fair held in Vancouver. Some 80 attendees were drawn from 11 countries, representing the academic, auto­ motive and large engine communities. The purpose of the symposium was to provide a critical review of the major alternatives to the internal combustion engine. The scope of the symposium was limited to consideration of combustion engines, so that electric power, for example, was not considered. This was not a reflec­ tion on the possible contribution which electric propulsion may make in the future, but rather an attempt to focus the proceedings more sharply than if all possible propulsion systems had been considered. In this way all of the contributors were able to participate in the sometimes lively discussion sessions following the presentation of each paper.

Essential for any detailed repair

I bought this because my focus dropped it's valve seat. This pretty common for the SOHC engine so I discovered. My engine dropped the #4 cylinder seat, which damaged the rod and piston. The cylinder wall was intact. This manual allowed me to take this apart and reassemble this at fractions of the cost that it would have been if I had a mechanic do the work. I have used it several times since this. Haynes is highly recommended as a reference for any vehicle that you have.

Beginner to Novice with some Expert jobs

This book is a must have if you own a Ford Focus. It'll save you a lot of money and time if you wish to do regular maintanence on your car. I like how this book is layed out. It even has a troubleshooting section and the causes of certain diagnostic codes which are labeled on two pages. It has a lot of novice type jobs which I'm sure can be done with a little mechanical background knowledge and this book. It even includes a general overhaul section that is described and pictured step by step. Buy this book! Only gripe I had was that it could have used more pictures.

When Sam Schwartz was growing up in Bensonhurst, Brooklyn, his block belonged to his community: the kids who played punchball and stickball and their parents, who'd regularly walked to the local businesses at which they also worked. He didn't realize it then, but Bensonhurst was already more like a museum of a long-forgotten way-of-life than a picture of America's future. Public transit traveled over and under city streets - New York's first subway line opened in 1904 - but the streets themselves had been conquered by the internal combustion engine.

America's dependency on the automobile began with the 1908 introduction of Henry Ford's car-for-everyone, the Model T. The "battle for right-of-way" in the 1920s saw the demise of streetcars and transformed America's streets from a multiuse resource for socializing, commerce, and public mobility into exclusive arteries for private automobiles. The subsequent destruction of urban transit systems and the post-World War II suburbanization of America, enabled by the Interstate Highway System and the GI Bill, forever changed the way Americans commuted.

But today, for the first time in history, and after a hundred years of steady increase, driving is in decline. Younger Americans increasingly prefer active transportation choices like walking or cycling and taking public transit, ride-shares, or taxis. Great lessons from one of the nation's most prominant traffic engineers on congestion, sprawl and why we need to do something about them. As a Cleveland, Ohio cyclist, I found it insightful, but as a taxpayer I found it compelling. We can't afford unbridled highway expansion, when we can't maintain and repair what we already have.

This is a brilliant book about the history and future of transportation in cities and their suburbs. The book includes a few somewhat rude jokes, and I hope that they will be deleted in next versions, but overall I learnt many interesting and surprising facts.
